Gone surfing...back in spring!

Gone surfing...back in spring!

It’s been a huuuuge year for Gower Women's Surf Society - we’ve had surf forecasting workshops, shaper tours, sell out monthly surf lessons, forged new partnerships and collaborations, plus succeeded in securing our first bit of grant funding which has enabled us to branch out into skating in a truly wonderful way. We’ve bought club surfskates and hosted two free takeovers of Exist Skatepark, you can read more about that here.

Taking a break

For now, Gower Women’s lead Tirion is off on an adventure for the next few months! Her PhD studies on women’s surfing are taking her to a visit to RMIT University in Melbourne until March. She’ll be visiting with Dr Rebecca Olive whose work on women, leisure, surfing and sports will be hugely beneficial for her PhD. She’s also hoping to link up with Manly Women’s Surf Society (MWS) in Sydney while she’s in that neck of the woods. There's a lovely story with this - MWS was set up by Welsh export Libbi Jones who, after joining some Gower Women’s socials, wanted to continue the movement of bringing women in surfing together! Before then though, it’s time for a proper little holiday - first stop, Sri Lanka!

What this means for you?

Club socials and the online shop will be paused until March but the WhatssApp and Facebook group will still be there (links here) as a wonderful community resource to link up with fellow surfers for sisterhood, socials & solidarity over the winter months. You can still register as a GWS member, but memberships will be processed once a month with the WSF.

A sneak peek at 2024

There’s an incredibly exciting 2024 ahead for the Gower Women & friends community. We’ll continue our ocean education workshops (surf forecasting, sea safety, shaper tours) as well as monthly surf socials & lessons with Progress Surf School from early April (exact date to be confirmed closer to the time). Our ambition for 2024 and beyond is to increase the offer for intermediate & advanced surfers through video analysis, tailored coaching and surf photography!

The Gower Women Skate project, funded by Sport Wales will also continue! As well as hosting more Exist Takeovers and social skates at The Slab, here’s a little taster of some bonus events…

Wed 17.04 Skate film night at Taliesin Arts Center in Swansea including the UK Premiere of Longboard Girls Crew's film 'Beyond Bo(a)rders' (bookings open)!! 7:30pm

Sat 27.04 Surfskate workshop at Spit and Sawdust in Cardiff with specialist coaches from Concrete Waves 6-9pm

Fri 17.05 A very exciting collaboration with Skateboard GB where we'll be hosting the UK's first women & non-binary skateboard coach qualification day at Exist Skatepark in Swansea. We'll have 8 funded spaces for our community!

Weekend 21.06 We’re planning something exciting for Go Skate Day 2024, watch this space 🤞🏼👀

Hwyl for now, g’day down under!
